Principal Consultant
Paul Deis, CFPIM

Paul Deis offers in-depth, hands-on turnaround management expertise as a Certified Fellow in Production and Inventory Management (“CFPIM”) executed with over 60 companies. His operational skills have been honed through many years with manufacturers of consumer electronics, medical devices, food, aerospace and defense, capital equipment in addition to companies operating in the insurance, medical, banking, and software industries. Paul is recognized for his expertise in authoring the globally distributed text “Production & Inventory Management in the Technological Age.”

Having served in various interim and permanent executive roles as VP operations, director of materials, and senior level consulting manager for a Big Four CPA firm, Paul has led scores of turnaround and crisis resolution projects over 20 years in the U.S. and internationally. His operational expertise includes materials and production management, processes, costing methods, organization/people, ERP, and other complex software systems.

A common thread throughout his career has been product costing systems and methods. Paul has multiple, successful projects involving standard cost, actual production cost, project cost, and uses of these data in assessing product and project profitability. These works have included software design through go/no-go sales decisions, product rationalization, pricing models/decisions, in/out sourcing, and negotiation of sales contracts. Paul was an early advocate of Activity Based Costing (“ABC”), its recent relative, Time-Driven ABC, and related contribution costing methods.

Paul integrates all levels of business – from overall go-to-market and product strategy, fulfillment and execution organization to detailed software and people processes. His “synchronized production” methodology integrates lean manufacturing methods, advanced supply chain management, and ERP system functionality to achieve significant and rapid (e.g., 30-90 days) improvements in production and inventory performance. His accomplishments with companies in various industries include:

* Food and consumer products – 50% drop in inventory; multi-million dollar reductions in fixed costs by consolidating multiple production facilities; design of new, advanced production facility; and reversal of virtual cash melt-down to profitable performance.

* Semi-conductor equipment manufacturer – Implementation of synchronized production methodology to reduce production cycle time from 12 to 3 weeks.
Contract manufacturer – Revamped production and supply chain infrastructure with 6 week ERP systems implementation, and stabilized Mexican supply chain and transportation operations.

* Contract manufacturer – Revamped production and supply chain infrastructure with 6 week ERP systems implementation, and stabilized Mexican supply chain and transportation operations.

* Consumer electronics – Corrected failed launch of major block-buster product with leading-edge production facility design brought on board within 4 weeks and major ERP development and implementation. Sales increased from $40 million to nearly $80 million rate within 6 months.

* Global chain supplier – Designed and facilitated appropriate organizational structure for a 2,000 member global supply chain team for a support project with rapid growth from $100 million to nearly $8 billion/year.

* Water heating equipment producer – Managed synchronized production to reduce inventory 25% within 60 days and production lead time from 3 weeks to 2 days that increased EBIT from 5% to over 15%.

Paul is a Certified Fellow in Production and Inventory Management from the Association for Production Management. He has written and presented widely to professional groups, including the Turnaround Management Association. Paul holds an MBA degree from California State University, Northridge, and a BA in Biology from the University of Texas, Austin.
